Chicago is the largest city by population in the state of Illinois and the American Midwest of the United States. It is currently ranked as the third-most populous city in the United States after New York and Los Angeles, with a population of nearly 3 million people. The Chicago metropolitan area (commonly referred to as Chicagoland) has a population of over 9.7 million people in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, making it also the third largest metropolitan area in the U.S.

Chicago is the most populous city in Illinois, though it is not the capital.
